The Great Discourse on
the Establishments of Mindfulness

Nidāna · The setting

Evaṃ me sutaṃ — ekaṃ samayaṃ bhagavā kurūsu viharati kammāsadhammaṃ nāma kurūnaṃ nigamo. Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi — "bhikkhavo"ti. "Bhadante"ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṃ. Bhagavā etadavoca —

Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling among the Kurus, where there was a town of the Kurus named Kammāsadhamma. There the Blessed One addressed the monks: "Monks." "Venerable sir," those monks replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this:

Uddesa · The direct path

"Ekāyano ayaṃ, bhikkhave, maggo sattānaṃ visuddhiyā, sokaparidevānaṃ samatikkamāya, dukkhadomanassānaṃ atthaṅgamāya, ñāyassa adhigamāya, nibbānassa sacchikiriyāya — yadidaṃ cattāro satipaṭṭhānā.

"This is the direct path1, monks, for the purification of beings, for the surmounting of sorrow and lamentation, for the disappearance of pain and grief, for the attainment of the true way2, for the realisation of Nibbāna — namely, the four establishments of mindfulness.

Uddesa · The four establishments

"Katame cattāro? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṃ; vedanāsu vedanānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṃ; citte cittānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṃ; dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṃ.

"What four? Here, monks, a monk dwells contemplating the body as a body — ardent, fully aware, and mindful, having put away covetousness and grief for the world3. He dwells contemplating feelings as feelings… mind as mind… and phenomena as phenomena — ardent, fully aware, and mindful, having put away covetousness and grief for the world.

Footnotes

1ekāyana — rendered here as "the direct path." The term has also been read as "the one and only way" and as "the path that goes in one direction only."

2ñāya — the right method, or true way; understood as the Noble Eightfold Path.

3"the world" (loka) — in this context, the five aggregates affected by clinging, rather than the external world.
